Japan needs a biometric passport
When
China–Malaysia visa exemption agreement in force since 17 July 2025 (5 years, then automatically extended 5 years)
Source
Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Wisma Putra) or the embassy

Updated 8 September 2026 against official sources (see the notes marked in the article).

Correction — updated 25 September 2026

Europe’s ETIAS will cost EUR 20, not €7, and it is not running yet: the EU says it will announce the start date several months in advance (official ETIAS website).

South Korea: Malaysia is not on Korea’s temporary K-ETA exemption list, so Malaysians need a K-ETA (KRW 10,000, valid 3 years). We previously said “K-ETA Exempted” (Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Malaysia).

New Zealand: the NZeTA is NZD 17 in the app or NZD 23 on the website, plus the NZD 100 International Visitor Levy — not “~NZD 52” (INZ Fees Guide, IVL page).

China: visa-free entry now runs under the China–Malaysia mutual visa exemption agreement, in force since 17 July 2025 for 5 years and then automatically extended for a further 5 years — not a policy “valid until 31 December 2026” (Embassy of China in Malaysia).

Each point above was re-checked against the official source linked in it on 25 September 2026. Rules and fees change; confirm with the agency before you act.

What are the Malaysia Passport Visa Free Countries 2026? As of 2026, the Malaysian passport remains powerful but faces new digital rules. The biggest change is that China visa free for Malaysians 2026 (up to 30 days per entry) now runs under a mutual visa exemption agreement that has been in force since 17 July 2025. However, travelers to the UK must now apply for the mandatory UK ETA (£20), and those visiting Europe will need the Europe ETIAS (EUR 20) once it starts — it is not running yet. Japan visa free for Malaysians continues for 90 days with biometric passports. Always check passport validity (6 months) to avoid being denied entry.

Walaoeh! Don’t simply buy flight tickets yet!

You know our Malaysia passport is like a “VIP Gold Card” in the travel world, right? We are consistently ranked in the Top 20 most powerful passports globally. We can walk into 180+ countries like we own the place.

But in 2026, the game has changed. “Visa-Free” doesn’t mean “Just Walk In” anymore. The world is moving towards “Digital Visas”. From London to Paris, and Beijing to Tokyo, the immigration officers want to see your “Digital Invitation” before they let you chop your passport.

If you are still thinking of the old 2024 rules, you are going to get “Kantoi” (caught) at the KLIA check-in counter. Imagine packing your winter jacket for London, but the airline staff says: “Sorry boss, where is your ETA?”  Sakit Hati Max.

In this Ultimate 2500-word Master Guide, we break down the Malaysia Passport Visa Free Countries 2026 status. We look at the good news (China visa free for Malaysians 2026 extension!), the bad news (UK charging money), and the confusing news (Europe ETIAS).

Grab a Teh Tarik, sit down, and let’s plan your 2026 holidays properly.

Section 1: The BIG Win – China Visa Free for Malaysians 2026

Walaoeh! Let’s start with the best news. Remember the old days? Waking up at 6 AM to queue at the Visa Center in KL, paying RM 200+, and getting scolded by the guard?

Forget it. The Embassy of China in Malaysia confirms that a mutual visa exemption agreement has been in force since 17 July 2025.

1. The New Rules for 2026

  • Keyword Check: China visa free for Malaysians 2026 runs under the China–Malaysia mutual visa exemption agreement, in force since 17 July 2025 for 5 years and then automatically extended for a further 5 years.
  • Duration: Up to 30 Days per entry, and no more than 90 days in total within any 180-day period. (Enough time to travel from Beijing to Xinjiang!).
  • Purpose: Tourism, Business, Visiting Relatives, Transit.
  • Passports Accepted: Malaysian ordinary passports valid for at least 6 months. (Diplomatic passports have different rules).

2. “Walaoeh” Tips for China Travel

  • Digital Arrival Card: Although no visa, you usually need to scan a QR code at the airport (Health Declaration) or fill a blue card.
  • Payment Apps: China doesn’t use Cash or Credit Card much. Before you fly, download Alipay or WeChat Pay and link your Malaysian Credit Card (Wise/BigPay works best).
  • VPN: WhatsApp and Facebook are blocked. Make sure you buy a Roaming Plan (Digi/Maxis/Celcom) or install a VPN before you land.

Section 2: The “Sakit Wallet” News – UK ETA for Malaysians 2026

Okay, boss, listen carefully. This is the one that catches people off guard. Since we were a British colony, we are used to just walking into London Heathrow. NOT ANYMORE.

Starting January 8, 2025 (and fully enforced in 2026), the UK introduced the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).

1. What is it?

It is NOT a visa. It’s a digital permission to fly. It’s exactly like the USA ESTA or Australian ETA.

  • Who needs it? Every Malaysian (including babies).
  • Validity: 2 Years (or until passport expires).
  • Multiple Entry: Yes.

2. How much is the damage?

The UK ETA for Malaysians price is £20, per GOV.UK. In Ringgit, prepare around RM 110.

3. How to Apply? (Step-by-Step)

  1. Don’t use third-party agents! They charge RM 300. Use the official method:
  2. Download App: Search “UK ETA” on App Store / Google Play.
  3. Scan Passport: Use your phone’s NFC to scan the chip in your passport.
  4. Face Scan: Take a selfie. (Don’t use filter lah).
  5. Questions: Answer simple questions (“Are you a terrorist?”).
  6. Pay: Use Credit/Debit card.
  7. Wait: Approval usually takes 3 days. Do not apply 2 hours before your flight!

Section 3: Europe is Calling (And Charging) – ETIAS 2026

Paris? Rome? Swiss Alps? The European Union is preparing the Europe ETIAS for Malaysians 2026 (European Travel Information and Authorisation System). It is not running yet: the EU says it will announce the exact start date several months before launch, and its July 2025 fee notice said the requirement would start from the last quarter of 2026. Until then, no ETIAS application is needed or accepted.

1. Which countries require ETIAS?

It’s for the Schengen Area. This includes:

  • Popular: France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Netherlands.
  • Others: Greece, Portugal, Austria, Belgium, Sweden, etc.
  • Note: UK is NOT in Schengen (they use ETA). Ireland is also separate.

2. The Cost

  • Fee: EUR 20.
  • Exemption: Free for travellers under 18 or over 70. (Respect for elders!).
  • Validity: Up to 3 years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.

3. Will it reject me?

Very unlikely. Unless you have a criminal record in Europe or overstayed your visa before. Warning: There are many “Scam Sites” looking like official ETIAS sites. Only use the official Europa.eu website.

Section 4: Japan – Steady Like Pom-Pi-Pi

Japan is the favorite holiday spot for Malaysians. The rules are stable, but don’t be blur.

1. Visa Rules

Japan visa free for Malaysians is valid for 90 Days.

  • Requirement: You MUST hold a Biometric Passport (with the ICAO chip symbol on the cover).
  • Old Passport? If you somehow still have a non-biometric passport (very rare), you need a visa.

2. The “Visit Japan Web” Hack

Don’t be the guy filling paper forms on the plane with a borrowed pen.

  1. Go to Visit Japan Web (Official Site).
  2. Register your trip details.
  3. Get the QR Codes (One for Immigration, One for Customs).
  4. Screenshot them.
  5. When you land at Narita/Haneda, show the QR code and walk through the “Fast Lane”.

Section 5: The “Leceh” Ones – Australia, USA & NZ

These countries are strict. “Kiasu” a bit when applying for these. If you also need a police clearance certificate for one of these applications, that’s covered in a separate guide.

Australia (ETA Subclass 601)

  • Cost: AUD 20 (Service charge).
  • Method: MUST use the “Australian ETA” App.
  • Risk: Malaysian approvals are usually instant. BUT, if your name is common (e.g., “Tan Ah Meng”) or matches a blacklist, it might go to “Further Assessment”. This can take 1 Month.
  • Walaoeh Tip: Apply at least 1 month before flying!

USA (Visa Required)

  • Status: NO Visa Free.
  • Process: Fill DS-160 form -> Pay USD 185 -> Interview at US Embassy KL.
  • Wait Time: Interview slots can be fully booked for 3 months. Plan early.

Section 6: ASEAN Automatic Gates (The hidden benefit)

Did you know Malaysians can use Autogates in our neighbor countries? No need to queue with the “Ang Mohs”!

  1. Singapore: All Malaysians can use the Automated Clearance Initiative (ACI) lanes. Just scan passport and thumbprint. (Must fill SG Arrival Card first!).
  2. Taiwan: Register for “E-Gate” upon arrival (one-time enrollment), then use autogate forever.
  3. Batam (Indonesia): Some ferry terminals now have autogates for ASEAN nationals.
  4. Thailand: At Suvarnabhumi (BKK), Malaysians can use the Auto-Gate to exit (and sometimes enter, depending on the system update).

Section 7: Top 3 Reasons You Will Be Denied Entry (Don’t Play Play)

Even if the country is Visa-Free, the airline can refuse to let you board.

1. The “6-Month Rule” Your passport must have at least 6 months validity from the date you return.

  • Scenario: You fly to Bangkok on Jan 1st. Return Jan 5th. Passport expires June 1st.
  • Result: DENIED. Because Jan 5th to June 1st is less than 6 months.
  • Solution: Renew your passport online. Check our Passport Renewal Guide.

2. The “Torn Page” If your passport has:

  • Water damage (Teh tarik spill).
  • A torn page (even a small tear).
  • A child’s drawing on it.
  • Result: DENIED. It is considered a “damaged document”. You need to replace it immediately. Check our MyKad & Document Replacement Guide.

3. No Return Ticket Immigration officers (especially in UK/Australia) want to know you are going home. If you book a one-way ticket, they will suspect you want to work there illegally (“Jumping Plane”). Always have a return ticket booking.

Summary: 2026 is the Year of “App Before You Fly”

The Malaysia Passport Visa Free Countries 2026 landscape is shifting. We are still powerful, but we need to be more organized.

The Golden Rule for 2026:

  • Going to China? You are a King. Just fly.
  • Going to the UK? You are a Guest. Pay the ETA fee, apply via App 3 days early. Europe? ETIAS is not running yet — check the official EU site before you fly.
  • Going to Japan? Get your QR code ready.

Don’t be “Last Minute Gang”. If you are flying in February 2026, start your UK ETA application in January. A small mistake can cost you your entire holiday budget.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  1. Do Malaysians need a visa for China in 2026?

No. The China visa free for Malaysians 2026 policy allows Malaysian citizens to enter China for tourism, business, or family visits for up to 30 days without a visa. It runs under the China–Malaysia mutual visa exemption agreement, in force since 17 July 2025 for 5 years and then automatically extended for a further 5 years. Total visa-free stays are capped at 90 days within any 180-day period.

  2. How much is the UK ETA for Malaysians price?

The UK ETA for Malaysians price is £20 (approx. RM 110), per GOV.UK. This fee is non-refundable and the ETA is valid for two years. All travelers, including children and babies, must have their own ETA before boarding a flight to the UK.

  3. When does Europe ETIAS for Malaysians 2026 start?

The Europe ETIAS for Malaysians 2026 is not running yet. The EU says it will announce the exact start date several months before launch; its July 2025 fee notice said the requirement would start from the last quarter of 2026. It is not a visa, but a pre-travel authorisation. It will cost EUR 20 (free for applicants under 18 or over 70) and is valid for up to 3 years, or until your passport expires, for travel to 30 European countries.

  4. Is Japan visa free for Malaysians?

Almost all. Whether you are going to visa-free countries like Thailand or ETA countries like the UK, airlines will strictly enforce the 6-month validity rule. If your passport expires in less than 6 months, you will be denied boarding.
