To apply, log in to the KWSP i-Akaun app, select the “i-Lindung” icon, browse plans from approved providers (like Prudential, Etiqa, AIA), and pay directly via your EPF balance. No cash payment or medical check-up is required for basic plans.

Correction — updated 24 September 2026

An FAQ answer below previously said education or medical insurance premiums qualify for up to RM3,000 of tax relief. On LHDN’s tax relief list for the year of assessment 2025, that relief is up to RM4,000; RM3,000 was the limit for the year of assessment 2024. The RM3,000 limit for life insurance is unchanged.

Walaoeh! You want Medical Card but wallet empty? 💸 We get it. Living costs in 2026 are crazy. You know you need insurance. You know protection is important. You have read our guide on the Medical card Malaysia 2026, but the monthly cash premium is often potong stim (expensive).

Or maybe you just raided your EPF Account 3 to buy a new phone, and now you feel guilty.

Relax, Bossku. Did you know you can use your EPF Account 2 (Akaun Sejahtera) to buy insurance? Yes, you don’t need to use your monthly salary. This program is called i-Lindung.

In this guide, we will show you how to apply, which insurance is best, and the pros/cons of using your retirement money for protection.

What is EPF i-Lindung? (The Basics)

Launched by KWSP (Kumpulan Wang Simpanan Pekerja), i-Lindung is a platform within the i-Akaun app. It lets you buy protection plans from approved insurance & takaful operators (ITOs).

The 2 Types of Protection:

  1. Life Protection (Hayat): Pays a lump sum if you die or get TPD (Total Permanent Disability).
  2. Critical illness coverage (Penyakit Kritikal): This plan pays a lump sum cash benefit if you are diagnosed with major illnesses like cancer, heart attack, or stroke.

Walaoeh Fact: You can buy it for Yourself, your Spouse, and your Children. (Sorry, parents not included yet!).

Part 1: Why Use i-Lindung? (Pros & Cons)

Before you jump in, let’s look at the math. Is it worth it?

FeatureBuying via i-Lindung (EPF)Buying via Agent (Cash)

Medical Check-upNo (Auto-Acceptance mostly)Yes (Strict)
ContractYearly RenewableLifetime / Yearly
Cash ValueNo (Pure Protection)Yes (Investment Link)

The Verdict: If you have zero insurance and low cash flow, EPF i-Lindung is a lifesaver. If you want fancy features (like Medical Card with VIP Room), stick to private agents.

Part 2: Who Can Apply? (Eligibility Checklist)

Don’t be syok sendiri. Check if you qualify first:

  • Nationality: Malaysian.
  • Status: KWSP Member with active i-Akaun.
  • Balance: Must have sufficient balance in Account 2 (Akaun Sejahtera).
  • Age: 16 to 55 years old (Policy usually ends at 60 or 70).

Part 3: Step-by-Step Application Guide (Cara Mohon)

Ready to protect yourself? Follow these steps. No need to meet any agent at Starbucks.

Step 1: Login to i-Akaun

  • To use EPF Account 2 for insurance, first open your mobile app. Perform your KWSP i-Lindung login by signing into the standard i-Akaun platform using your User ID and Password.

Step 2: Find the Icon

  • Look for the “Member Protection Plan” or “i-Lindung” icon on the dashboard.

Step 3: Browse Plans

  • Select who you are buying for (Self/Spouse/Child).
  • The app will list plans from partners like Prudential BSN Takaful, Etiqa, AIA, Zurich, etc.

Step 4: Select Coverage Amount

  • Example: RM100,000 Life Coverage.
  • The system will quote the Annual Premium (e.g., RM250/year).

Step 5: Deduction

  • Confirm the payment.
  • KWSP will deduct the Annual Premium from your Account 2 immediately.
  • Note: It is a yearly deduction. You need to renew next year.

Part 4: List of Insurance Providers (The Menu)

KWSP partners with the big boys. You are spoiled for choice with plans from AIA, Etiqa, and the popular Prudential BSN Takaful EPF packages. Compare them carefully before choosing.

  • AIA Public Takaful
  • Etiqa Life Insurance / Family Takaful
  • Prudential BSN Takaful
  • Zurich Life / Takaful
  • Allianz Life

Which one is best? Honestly, the prices are very competitive because KWSP controls the ceiling price. Compare the Sum Covered vs Premium.

  • Example: If Etiqa offers RM50k coverage for RM100/year, and AIA offers RM50k for RM120/year, go with the cheaper one if the benefits are same.

Part 5: Common Traps & Warnings (Don’t Say I Didn’t Warn You)

It is NOT a Medical Card: Most i-Lindung plans are Critical Illness or Life Insurance (Cash Payout). Very few offer “Hospital Admission Cards”. If you get admitted, you still need to pay bills first or use government hospitals.

Renewal is NOT Automatic: Every year, you must authorize the deduction again (or set auto-recurring in the app). If your Account 2 runs dry, the policy lapses.

Nomination Matters: Who gets the money if you die? The insurance payout follows the Insurance Nomination, NOT your EPF Nomination. Make sure you put your wife/mom’s name when you sign up!

So, macam mana? Should you buy?

If you currently have Zero Protection and a fat Account 2, please buy EPF i-Lindung today. It protects your family without touching your monthly makan money.

But if you are rich and want the best coverage, go find a steady agent.

Walaoeh Checklist:

  1. Check Acc 2: Do you have at least RM200?
  2. Download App: Update i-Akaun.
  3. Compare: Don’t just pick the first one, scroll and see price.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  1. Can I use EPF i-Lindung for tax relief?

Yes! The premium paid via EPF i-Lindung qualifies for Income Tax Relief under LHDN’s relief list for the year of assessment 2025: life insurance or family takaful (up to RM3,000) or education or medical insurance (up to RM4,000), depending on the plan type.

  2. Does i-Lindung cover pre-existing conditions?

Most EPF i-Lindung plans offer “Guaranteed Acceptance”, meaning they don’t ask about your health history. However, there is usually a “Waiting Period” (e.g., 60-120 days) before you can claim for critical illnesses.

  3. Can I cancel the policy and get money back?

You can cancel within the “Cooling-off Period” (usually 15 days) for a refund into your EPF account. After that, there is generally no cash value refund because these are pure protection plans, not savings plans.
