Walaoeh! Flight tickets too expensive? Road tax expired? It sounds like you need to hop on the KL to Hat Yai Train 2026 service for a Tom Yam fix! 🥭🇹🇭

It is 2026. The ringgit is fluctuating, but our love for Hat Yai is eternal. Every long weekend (check our Malaysia Public Holidays 2026 Guide), thousands of Malaysians flood the border.

Why drive for 8 hours and get stuck at Bukit Kayu Hitam when you can take the ETS Train? It’s comfortable, air-conditioned, and has a toilet! But bro, buying the ticket is a war. The Padang Besar Border Crossing can be a nightmare if you don’t know the “lubang” (tricks).

In this guide, we hold your hand from KL Sentral all the way to Lee Gardens Plaza. We will teach you how to grab ETS tickets, how to fill the Thai Arrival Card, and where to eat Fried Chicken in Hat Yai.

Correction — updated 22 September 2026

This guide previously said Thailand had suspended the T.M. 6 land-border arrival card — it hasn’t. Since 1 May 2025, every non-Thai national entering Thailand (including by train through Padang Besar) must submit a Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online, free, within 72 hours before arrival — do this before you travel, not at the counter.

We also had the SRT shuttle-train schedule wrong: the Padang Besar to Hat Yai commuter trains actually run at 10:15 and 15:40 (plus a Special Express at 17:00), not 2:00 PM/4:40 PM, and the trip takes 45-46 minutes, not 55.

Updated 22 September 2026 against official sources (see the notes marked in the article).

Part 1: Buying the ETS Ticket ( The War Begins)

You want to catch the KL to Hat Yai Train 2026 on a Friday? Good luck. Tickets for this popular route sell out 1 month in advance.

ETS Platinum vs ETS Gold

  • ETS Platinum: Fewer stops, slightly faster, provides snacks (sometimes). Price: ~RM130-149 (KTMB booking system, checked 22 Sep 2026 — fares vary by train and date).
  • ETS Gold: More stops, cheaper. Price: ~RM106-111 (KTMB booking system, checked 22 Sep 2026). There’s also an ETS Express service — fewer stops than Platinum, about 4h50m, priced similarly to Platinum.
  • Walaoeh Recommendation: Take Platinum if the schedule works for you — it’s the fastest scheduled option after Express, and usually only a bit pricier than Gold.

How to Book (KTM Mobile App)

  1. Download the KTMB Mobile app (Official).
  2. Select Origin: KL Sentral (or your nearest station).
  3. Select Destination: Padang Besar (NOT Arau, NOT Alor Setar).
  4. The Secret: KTMB publishes ticket sale-opening dates on its own website and social media as each batch opens — there’s no fixed “30th of every month” rule in its official terms. Check KTMB’s channels close to your travel month, and set your alarm the moment sales open!

(Pro Tip: Use a credit card that gives points for travel. Check our Best Credit Card 2026 Guide to earn miles while you sleep).

Part 2: The Padang Besar Border Crossing (Survival Guide)

You have arrived at Padang Besar Station via the KL to Hat Yai Train 2026. Now the chaos begins. To complete your KL to Hat Yai Train 2026 journey, you need to clear TWO immigrations in the same building.

Step 1: Malaysia Immigration (Keluar)

  • Get off the ETS train. Run (yes, walk fast) to the immigration counters upstairs.
  • Scan your Passport. This is fast.

Step 2: Thailand Immigration (Masuk)

  • Walk 10 meters. You will see the Thai counters.
  • The Queue: This can take 1 to 2 hours during holidays.
  • Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC): The old T.M. 6 paper card is gone — since 1 May 2025, every non-Thai national entering by land, air or sea must submit a TDAC online (free, at tdac.immigration.go.th) within 72 hours before arrival. Do it before you board the train — you need the confirmation to clear immigration, and you must resubmit it for every entry.
  • Passport Stamp: The officer will stamp your passport. CHECK THE DATE STAMP. Sometimes they stamp the wrong date, and you get fined when leaving!

(Warning: Ensure you are not blacklisted by PTPTN before leaving! Check our PTPTN Repayment Guide to clear your name).

Part 3: Padang Besar to Hat Yai (The Final Leg)

You are officially in Thailand! But you are still at the border. You need to get to Hat Yai city (60km away).

Option A: The SRT Shuttle Train (Best Choice)

  • Schedule: There is a specific shuttle train that runs from Padang Besar (Thai side) to Hat Yai Junction.
  • Timetable (Thai Time): Per SRT’s official timetable (checked 22 September 2026), three services run from Padang Besar to Hat Yai Junction: commuter trains 948 at 10:15 and 950 at 15:40, plus the Special Express 46 at 17:00 (Check the State Railway of Thailand site for the latest schedule).
  • Price: Not listed on SRT’s official timetable for these commuter trains — budget a small amount of Baht and confirm at the counter.
  • The Train: No aircon (open window).
  • Flood Warning: During heavy rain or monsoon season, the Shuttle Train service might be suspended due to track flooding. Always have a backup plan.

Option B: Minivan / Taxi

  • If you miss the train, walk downstairs to the parking lot.
  • Minivan: ~150-200 Baht per person. Squeeze like sardines.
  • Taxi: ~1000 Baht per car. Expensive but comfortable.

Part 4: Best Food in Hat Yai 2026 Guide (Makan Until Explode)

After enduring the 5-hour KL to Hat Yai Train 2026 ride, you didn’t come here to sightsee. You came here to EAT.

1. Kai Tod Decha (Halal)

  • The Dish: Fried chicken topped with fried shallots.
  • Must Order: Fried Chicken, Tom Yam Seafood, Teh Tarik (Thai style).

2. Chok Dee Dim Sum

  • The Rule: You must wake up at 6 AM. By 8 AM, the queue is long.
  • On the Menu: Bak Kut Teh (Herbal style) + endless trays of dim sum.

3. Khlong Hae Floating Market

  • Open: Friday – Sunday only.
  • Vibe: Buy food from boats. Drink coconut water from clay pots.
  • Warning: Very crowded. Watch your wallet.

4. 7-Eleven Hunts

You cannot leave Thailand without visiting 7-Eleven.

  • Must Buy: Meiji Milk (Banana/Melon), Shrimp Wonton Soup (Microwave), Lay’s Chips (Thai flavors), Toastie (Ham & Cheese).

Part 5: Money & Internet (Don’t Be a Caveman)

Connectivity

  • Do not use Malaysia Data Roaming (Expensive!).
  • Buy a SIM Card: DTAC or AIS Tourist SIM at the border or Hat Yai station. ~200 Baht for unlimited data.
  • Or: Buy online via Klook before you go.

Money (Cash vs QR)

  • Cash is King: Street food stalls prefer Cash (Baht).
  • QR Payment: Many shops (7-11, Big C, Watsons) accept DuitNow QR (via Touch ‘n Go eWallet or Maybank MAE).
  • How: Open your TNG eWallet, scan the Thai “PromptPay” QR code. It auto-converts MYR to THB.
  • Security Alert: Be careful of fake QR codes. Read our TNG Scam Alert to stay safe.

Part 6: Accommodation (Where to Sleep?)

Lee Gardens Area (Central)

  • Pros: Center of everything. Walking distance to market.
  • Cons: Noisy, traffic jam, old hotels.
  • Hotels: Centara Hotel, The Regency.

Asean Night Market Area

  • Pros: Near the big night market.
  • Cons: Need TukTuk to go to town center.
  • Hotels: Monkham Village (Atas & Nice).

Summary: Sawadee Krup!

Taking the KL to Hat Yai Train 2026 is a rite of passage for Malaysians. It’s cheap, it’s adventurous, and the reward is unlimited Tom Yam. Just make sure you plan your ETS Ticket and Border Crossing timing perfectly so you don’t end up sleeping at the train station.

Walaoeh Action Plan:

  1. Check Weather: Is it Monsoon Season? (Nov-Dec). Check first!
  2. Book ETS: Set reminder 1 month before.
  3. Check Passport: Ensure >6 months validity.
